Review: The Body Shop's Drops of Youth Concentrate

Ayyyy, I'm backkk! I'm just posting some of my saved drafts, I finished using this product already and have moved on to something else! There is still one draft left to post, and then I will be writing posts that are more up to date! Can't wait! <3

This is the serum that I am currently using to help me recover from a massive breakout that lasted for over 9 months. You can read  the original post and a list of review links to all the products that I am currently using by clicking "Life Rant: How I Stopped Breaking Out"

Product:
The Body Shop's Drops of Youth Concentrate

Price:
$38 CAD for 30 ML and $50 CAD for 50 ML

Claims:
"Youth-enhancing concentrate for smoother-looking skin"

Some Background
During  the 9 month breakout, when my acne was especially bad, I tried a sample of this serum accompanied with a sample sized Tea Tree Blemish Fade Night Lotion.

The samples lasted for about a week. During my use of the Drop of Youth, many friends commented that my acne seemed much less severe; so I purchased the full size products, and it has lasted me for about 8 months (applied twice daily).

My Review:
Despite having used this product for a period of time now , I am still very unsure of the results. The Drops of Youth serum leaves my skin feeling smooth and soft, but it does not live up to its claims regarding cell regeneration. I was told by the sales rep that this serum would help the regeneration of skin. This regeneration would in turn lighten acne scars and increase the skin's recovery speed.

I'm not going to lie, some scars are definitely fading. BUT, I wouldn't be so quick to think it's this magical serum's doing. As I've mentioned previously in my life rant post, time is a major contributing factor in healing acne scars. A good lifestyle, such as a good sleeping schedule, would help the skin recover much better than any external products. But I bet you already knew that.

Anyway, taking time into consideration, I don't think the results that the Drops of Youth Serum provided was prominent at all. But I guess I will give it props for stabilizing my skin as it did not cause further breakouts. Again, giving products some time instead of constantly switching products will also help the recovery of the skin.

The Application:
The serum comes in a glass bottle with a dropper that reduces the chance of contaminating the product. However, I find it a little difficult to squeeze out the product from the dropper.

The serum itself is transparent and has a slimy consistency, but not in a bad way. One and a half drops is enough for my entire face, and the consistency allows it to be easily applied. After applying the serum onto the face, it quickly gets "absorbed". I put the quotation marks on absorbed because the second ingredient on the list of this serum is Denatured Alcohol , so it is possible that the product has evaporated rather than absorbed.

Other than containing alcohol, this product also balls up after application. This really makes me question whether the product is absorbed by the skin at all.

Conclusion:
I find this serum has little effect on overall cellular regeneration and lightening acne scars. The Drops of Youth does make the skin feel very smooth and soft, but given the fact that Glycerin is the third ingredient on the list, I wouldn't be surprised since the main function of Glycerin is to soften skin. At the same time, you will find this substance in every single skincare product. ( That's why I say how soft your skin feels after using a product is a terrible judging meter) You can learn more about the function of Glycerin here, it will direct you to Paula's Choice Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary.

I am seriously skeptical about whether this serum is absorbed by the skin at all, given the second ingredients is Alcohol Denat and it also balls up.

Finally, just by looking at the top three ingredients for this serum: water, alcohol denat and glycerin, I am highly skeptical that this product can support the claims of increased cell regeneration. Which probably explains why the sales rep could not answer my question "what ingredients makes this product useful?".

Quick Summary
Pros
- Skin feels refreshed after use
- Helps somewhat in the stabilization of my skin
- Is not irritating
- Has a good tool that prevents contamination

Cons
- Does not support the claims of increased cell regeneration
- Top three ingredients are not the most useful ingredients
- Contains high amount of alcohol denat
- Contains at least 3 other perservatives

Ratings out of 5: 2.5 out of 5 (50%)

Will I Purchase it Again?

This product is called "Drops of Youth", so I am assuming it has somewhat of an anti-aging property to it. It also claims that it would improve cells regeneration, and have obviously failed to do so. I say that $38 bucks for a bottle of skin softening water that contains alcohol denat is quite a bit wouldn't you say? No, I would not purchase this product again.

  1. I agree yo an extent. Inthebeginning, I fidnt think yhis serum was contributing muvh to my skin. But it did. This srrum requires huge amounts of patience though. I oncce went through an extreme case of skin sensitivity with major breakouts everywhere. This alongside oils of life was all I use and it, though quite slowly, miraculously fixed the problem for me and you can see a huge difference before and after. Andalso once I was impatientlyytying yo f8nishthe doy bottle asap so I hastilly drop the qhole bottle remaining contents into my hand and put it on my face so I can move on and try a different serum, I overdif the amount but boy was I shocked. My face GLOWED that healthy luminous gloe minus the oilanf grease. It eas matt, however very glowly and gradient and healthy looking. Now, Ivewent throughso manybottles of this. Im fickle minded and getbored easily so I occassionally switch to something different time to time, but I alwas come back to this eventually. Its my safe haven. Because I know for a fact it wont aggravate my skin. So even though its not outstanfing enough and frustratingly slow/unnoticible, its in in for the longrun.
